First Potty

A couple of weeks ago, I put a little potty in the bathroom for Sofia to sit on when she wanted to. At first she wanted to have nothing to do with it, and then it became a passion of hers. But she never did anything other than sit on it. Yesterday, she brought it to me while I was cooking and I asked her if she wanted to go potty. She said "Yeeesss" - the first word she says consistently (more on that later.) So we took it into the bathroom and I helped her sit down. And she went pee-pee!

Someone told me that according to Montessori wisdom, the "sensitive period" for toilet training is 12-18 months. So this is either the beginning, or a random occurrence. I'm thinking about going for it.

  1. what a cutie!
good luck with it! I can believe that 12-18 months might work... We did it at 21 months, based off another guide, and as I realized later, that was good timing because we snuck it in just before her very opinionated, do-the-opposite-of-what-mom-wants phase kicked in. And since then, as I've watched other kids in her class try it at older ages (more like 3 yo), I've been very glad we did it younger-- especially because Josephine has only grown MORE independent with even MORE contrary tendencies. Only downside is how small their bladders are when they are so young-- but the next time around, I would still prefer to deal with a small bladder rather than a large attitude!

    1. I really think that the people who decided that 2 - 3 is the ideal time to train are the pull-ups people because they know it's next to impossible. We were like you with Lucas. I remember thinking I got it done right in time - just before his rebelliousness hit an all time peak! (We did it at 25 months.)

  3. YAY for Sofia!!!
A good friend of mine's son showed interest at just shy of 18 months and SUCCESSFULLY trained at that age.
I say theres something to that way of thinking (not that we did that, but i can see it working)!
