Sofia, Seven Months

We had our "six month" appointment just after Sofia turned seven months. By the time Dr. Abrams entered the room the books from the bottom shelf of the patient's table (where Sofia had been "playing house") were strewn all over the floor and the step-up stool and small chairs had been rearranged. She was grinning wildly and crawling around gripping her new beloved treasure - about four feet of crumpled table-lining paper.

Sofia dropped down to the 90th percentile (from 97th) for both length and weight. Her length seemed significantly underestimated so I didn't bother remembering it. Her weight was 19lb. 12oz. and her head circumference was around 16cm, about Chris's neck size. (Lucas at this age was over the top of the charts.)

She is eating 3-4 solid meals per day and definitely prefers homemade food (although Earth 's Best fruit purees are always a hit...apples & apricots, plums or blueberries - yum!) I feed her easy meals like banana put through the food mill and mixed with plain yogurt and rice cereal or pureed oatmeal. Or I rely on whatever meals I have frozen. We are still working on the chicken soup and now have a new and very pretty favorite - pink lentils with peaches! My project once Lucas returns to school (tomorrow!) is to add more variety to her diet and up the protein and greens.

She has four teeth, two on the bottom and two on the top. The top right was getting long and lonely there for a while there and we were just thankful that it was off center. But this morning the top left came through.

She's nursing about four times a day and once at night. (Although the other night she was up every hour - that was fun!) I'm happy to say that she is finally spitting up less, even if I break the play, eat, sleep cycle that I had to stick to pretty religiously for a while.

She naps about 2-3 times a day.

Sofia is almost always happy, even if she is hungry or under slept. She keeps her composure but steadily increases her complaining until her need is met. (She reserves some tears for bedtime and the middle of the night - any time the party ends.) It's very easy to distract her with a new toy especially if it's not a toy. She gets most excited over small bags and shoes. Today she even crumpled up her face and cried when she saw my clutch purse (which she thinks belongs to her) but couldn't play with it. It is beaded and I've become more cautious after the choking incident.

We've received many comments recently on how much Sofia resembles Lucas. I'm not sure I agree. When you pick apart their features, they could not be more different. But there is some overall quality they share, which I can not quite pinpoint.

We can't even remember a time when Sofia wasn't highly mobile. Even before she was crawling, she could stumble and roll across the room if an object in her line of vision was interesting enough. Thankfully there are several ways I can contain her. She is up for the exersaucer more often these days (recently I caught her resting her head on it for a split second, but only because she was suffering from a pretty bad cold.) She will also stay in the pack and play for a few moments if given an enticing toy. I also employ the Ergo on a regular basis.

She keeps me running and tired, but how I love my happy busybody.

Sofia at seven months.

Lucas at about 6 months. Eyebrows! (The beaded purse is in the background.)

Lucas and I used to cozy up and watch tv. This scene would never be possible with Sofia. She'd have crawled off the bed before the chip made it into my mouth.
